I started upholstery having bought a pair of chairs that I fell in love with but needed all new upholstery, as the springs were through the seat base. I bought myself an upholstery book thinking I could teach myself how to restore them, but that was wishful thinking on my behalf. Having stripped the chairs down to the frame I began to upholster them and soon discovered that the steps in the book were not very clear, I needed to be shown, so I found and began an upholstery course.
Since starting the course I have loved every minute of restoring worn out, old or tired chairs and turning them into something truly beautiful again. It is very satisfying. I enjoyed the basic starter course so much that I completed the whole course, from woodwork restoration, to making cushions through many different levels of upholstery including upholstering a chesterfield to obtain my diploma.
I have a diploma in chair restoration and traditional upholstery. This means that I can restore your chair frame and then re-upholster it using the traditional hand sewn techniques. I can make feather seat cushions through to sprung cushions to fit any chair and can deep button upholster your chair, stool or bed frame. I have recently been taught how to hand-weave cane seats, so I can now offer you this service too.
I prefer to only use natural products, not synthetic foams, within the chairs. I aim to reuse all the materials that I can from each chair (wash and condition horsehair for re-use within your chair), which will cut the cost for you and is good recycling! I prefer to use natural materials over synthetic as they are better for the environment, provide a longer lasting seat base and ensures a better quality of finish. I have a perfectionist streak within me and strive to make the best possible finish paying close attention to every detail.
I hope to continue my upholstery skills by attending an upholstery course specifically aimed at restoring vintage and classic car upholstery. Where I will learn the traditional methods used to upholster vintage car seats as well as all the trim panels, fabric tonneaus, covers and hoods. I will keep you updated on my progress within this field as well as provide you with examples of my work here on the website.
I hope to hear from you soon and help you will all your upholstery requirements.
